This was a group project focussing on Spa Road Bridge in Bermondsey. We examined ways of intervening within the space to create an interactive experience for those using it. We really wanted this intervention to centre around the five senses, particularly hearing. We created two pieces for use within the space. The first was a trolley which used a Zoom device to record the sounds that the movement of the trolley made on the floor. These sounds were then played back to the user via headphones. We really wanted the sound to be the predominant experience for the user so we also provided blindfolds. The second piece consisted of two large speakers that were connected to a piece of string. The string was then attached to the pillars under the bridge and vibrated whenever a train passed over the bridge. The subsequent vibrations were played on loud speakers to passersby. The bridge is in constant use by many people but we felt that most people never took the time to really see and hear it.
