About Me:
My name is Virginia and I am a London based designer. The word designer is one that I am yet to personally define, but for the moment I think it works well for me as I enjoy a wide range of creative disciplines and am still open to trying new ones. I love architecture and various past design movements such as, Brutalism, Bauhaus, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modernism. With architecture I am not only interested in the building itself but also how people socially interact with the inside and outside of buildings and understanding how the space is used by people and built for people. For me this is on any scale from a small room to the landscape if a massive city.
I am interested in the conservation of architecture, especially now when we live in a time where buildings of significance to architectural history (like Robin Hood Gardens) are being knocked down to make way for unaffordable and unappealing buildings. Buildings are becoming less about the people and more about making money and I don’t agree with this.
I am also fascinated by many of the weird quirks of life and topics that are believed to be taboo and not spoken about, such as cannibalism and understanding where the lines and boundaries are for these sorts of subjects. I often find myself being most invested in subjects and themes that I interact with on a day to day basis and allowing myself to become passionate about these things and wanting to explore them in detail. I find a strength of my works comes from my love of research and the processes it involves, this allows me to create a well-informed basis for the outcomes I am creating. A lot of my work stems from topics where I figure out the rules and change and manipulate them in order to benefit me or a wider group.
The photo to the left shows me holding a ten pence coin, this photo is taking in relation to an essay I wrote where I legally became the owner of one of my teddies so that if my mum were to wash it and cause it harm I could legally sue her. This being another example where I have used my understanding for reading between the lines when it comes to rules and laws to benefit me.
